The purpose of this church shall be as revealed in the New Testament:  to win people to faith in Jesus Christ and commit them actively to the church; to help them grow in the grace and knowledge of Christ that increasingly they may know and do His will, and to work for the unity of all Christians.

CONTEMPORARY WORSHIP UPDATE

It was a very productive and hopeful conversation that took place last Sunday morning in the Family Life Center regarding our past contemporary worship service and the possible creation of a new one.  We will meet again this coming Sunday, October 29, in the Family Life Center at 9a.m. to continue the conversation.  We want to invite everyone who came to come back and anyone who couldn’t make it but would like to participate in the conversation to join us.

Much was discussed and affirmed about where we’ve come from and there was hope and energy in the conversation that centered around where we’re going.  Two primary areas need your focused thoughts and prayers:

     1.  Music – for a contemporary service to have the quality that will attract and keep young people with families and the un-churched, it needs to sound familiar – like what they might listen to on the radio.  We are in greatest need of a strong lead guitarist and some additional vocalists.  Other instruments, percussion, etc. would enhance the sound of the praise team greatly.  If we don’t have committed volunteers to meet these needs, hiring musicians would be our next option.  As we prepare for our commitment of time, talent and treasure for the ministries of the church for the coming year, you will want to consider this ministry.  Perhaps you have a talent that you’ve yet to share with the church that could be a blessing to this type of service and the people it reaches.

     2.  Schedule and Location – Among those gathered on Sunday, there was a strong interest in moving a new contemporary worship service into our Sanctuary.  The primary reasons behind this were to increase the flow of contact and fellowship between the people who attend the different worship services, and to make the audio-visual technology available for both contemporary and traditional worship.  Regarding the Sunday morning schedule, there was a strong consensus among those gathered that it would be beneficial to re-arrange the Sunday morning worship schedule as follows:

       8:15 AM - Chapel Service

       9:00 AM - Traditional Service

     10:00 AM - Sunday School

     11:00 AM - Contemporary Worship

Some of the hopes and values attached to this idea of a new schedule included:  Giving the later worship time to the service meant to attract young families and the un-churched.  The idea behind this was that young families take time to get going in the morning.  Some might like to sleep in a little, and this makes room for their needs and still provides them with a worship opportunity that appeals to them on a practical level.  Some of our long-time members who participated in the conversation pointed out that in households where the kids are grown and gone, it’s a little easier to get up and get to church in time for a 9:00 am service.  A hope was also expressed that such a schedule might improve attendance at Sunday School and fellowship dinners as well.  It does require a sacrifice and willingness to change on the part of people already in our church for the sake of those who might come.  Of those gathered, most viewed this as more than just a desire for the survival of First Christian Church.  More importantly, they felt it was an act of faithfulness to Christ’s call to make disciples.  Faithfulness takes faith and hope and trust - in God and in each other.  Please be in prayer for our church, our worship services, and our ministry, and faithfulness to God.                 (Continued on Page 2)
